INTRODUCTION

TECHNICAL

With OTHER rocker arm manufacturers, and especially with the most promoted "shaft" rocker manufacturer, rockers have been "fit" to "heads." What's the difference? The difference, is that Jim Miller has always, always, always, since 1973 designed rocker arms to fit ENGINES! If you don't have the accurate specs of the engine, having only the "head" means nothing.

Today, more sophisticated ways to develop designs are used, from the days when a Mutoh draft table was the only way. But computers only speed the process. The above "exploratory" drawing of the Chevrolet SB2-2, done from this basic layout, is how all critical motion tangent points are determined from the perspectives Jim has used for 25+ years. Mass and shape of the rocker bodies from this point on is simple. Solid modeling follows in placing all components in an assembly. Mass weight, moment of inertia, rocker side thrusts, lifter preloads and many other critical facts are determined and modified long before any metal is ever cut. But it all starts here, the old fashioned way, as it has for 30 years. The ENTIRE engine. The heavily advertised "shaft" rocker arm company designs rockers from ONLY measuring "heads." MEI designs for the entire valve train of the engine! The difference, is PUSHROD Geometry. We call this "Design Geometry," and no other company knows more about this than MEI; we developed it.

MEI's "C6" for the SB2-2 NASCAR. The simple, but highly detailed and precise 2-D CAD drawing (top) is only the first step of many, flowing through a variety of software. From "exploratory" to "production." CAD, Solid Modeling (above), Kinetic Motion analysis, DNC/CAM manufacturing...all make the process flow smoothly. But the fundamentals have never changed. The concepts of "Design Geometry" was founded on this simple process, that became the foundation of MID-LIFT geometry: measuring the entire engine's valve train from the cam to the valve. Using the exact pushrod attack angles as they operate with the valve.

Choose the LINKS above that you need. Each choice gives you another option of choices for each section of tech. The CYLINDER HEADS section, is fundamentals we use for valve train design, that help us avoid the problems associated with choosing valve lengths, pushrods, rocker studs and other parts which are routinely selected at random. Hopefully these standards will help you avoid the same.
